Urine Test To Detect Prostate Cancer

The prostate specific antigen (PSA) test for prostate cancer is not perfect, and many men with elevated levels of PSA in their blood undergo prostate biopsies that turn out to be not needed.  A new, non-invasive, test has been shown to work well with PSA testing to detect the presence of prostate cancer.

The new test detects a genetic change found in 50% of prostate cancers and also measures levels of a protein called prostate cancer antigen 3 (PCA3).  Together, the results of the the new test and the PSA test make unnecessary biopies much less likely.
