Biopsy

Non invasive diagnostic techniques, like MRI, Ultrasound, CT or PET, are very useful but in some cases when a suspicious abnormality (lesion) is discovered a doctor may perform a biopsy to determine its exact characteristics. A biopsy is the removal of either a portion of a lesion (incisional) or the entire lesion (excisional).  The tissues is then sent to a lab where a pathologist will diagnose the sample. There are two categories of biopsies.
