Dacarbazine (DTIC-Dome®)

Usage: Malignancies for which dacarbazine is used include: Metastatic melanoma and Hodgkin's disease. Dacarbazine is administered as an intravenous infusion.

Mechanism: Dacarbazine (DTIC-Dome®) is thought to inhibit DNA synthesis and prevent cell division. Though the exact action of the drug is not known it is proposed that the drug may work as an antimetabolite or may act as an alkylating agent.

Side Effects: Common side effects include: nausea and vomiting, anorexia, hair loss, and facial flushing. Dacarbazine should not be taken by women who are pregnant and patients should not become pregnant while using this drug, as it may have harmful effects on the developing fetus. Bone marrow depression is the most common toxicity associated with dacarbazine usage. It is important to monitor the levels of white blood cells, red blood cells and platelets. (1)
