Usage: Malignancies for which bleomycin is used include squamous cell carcinomas (including those of the head and neck, penis, cervix, and vulva), Hodgkin's disease,
non-Hodgkin's
lymphoma, testicular cancer. Bleomycin is usually administered by injection.
Mechanism: Bleomycin (Blenoxane®) is a mixture of
cytotoxic antibiotics taken from a
bacteria. It is thought to inhibit
DNA synthesis, and to a lesser degree
RNA and
protein synthesis. This action prevents cell division.

Side Effects: Possible pneumonitis which can progress to pulmonary fibrosis.
Contraindications: Usually not used for patients with decreased liver or kidney function.
