Colonoscopy is a diagnostic technique that allows physicians to visually inspect the interior lining of the colon. Colonoscopy is performed by a physician specially trained in the procedure and is commonly used as a screening tool for colon cancer. The exam is performed with an instrument called a colonoscope, which is inserted into the rectum and throught the colon.
